Taisho period (1912-26). Gold, silver and coloured makie on a black roiro ground.
21.4 x 14.4 x 13.0 cm. Signed. Original storage box.
A chabako held the accoutrements of the tea ceremony. The design of this example is executed in gold, silver and coloured hiramakie and togadashie set against a brilliant black ground. It wraps around three sides of the box and over the lid, showing a nightingale ( uguisu) perched amongst wild rhododendron ( shakunage) whose gorgeous pink flowers are depicted at various stages of opening. The subject matter is evocative of late Spring.
This is a fine example of 1920s design, taking a traditional subject but adopting the scale and bold stylistic line of the period.
