by KODA Shuetsu (1881–1933).
Late Taisho/early Showa period, 1920s.
Gold and black makie with shell inlay.
23.2 x 16 x 4 cm. Original signed and sealed storage box.
A beautiful rinpa-style design depicting a single lily flower head in extraordinary shell inlay, set against a dense gold ground with subtly contrasting gold leaves and stamen. The form of the box is a classic Kyoto faceted shape inspired by the work of Koetsu, its outer faces executed in a simple brown lacquer. The box opens to reveal a stylised design of grasses against a pure black roiro ground.
